NetApp is hosting a community event at their new building on the Wichita State University campus dedicated to their environmental cause. On Friday, July 29th from 11AM - 1PM, the company is hosting a shredding and E-waste event. This event is to encourage proper and environmentally safe disposal. It is open to campus staff, students, faculty and innovation partners. They will be offering secure shredding for personal documents and secure destruction of E-waste with a hard drive shredder. They are also accepting all personal appliances and electronics and are accepting large loads. This is a great opportunity to safely and securely dispose of personal electronics and documents. NetApp is expecting a great turn out and the event will be hosted in the SE NetApp parking lot.

Wichita is growing like crazy with new businesses opening every month. It is so exciting to see what our city has to offer with new places to shop, restaurants to try and more! Some new local and chain spots have opened this July and we are so excited to go visit them! Here is a list of some of our new spots in town:

JoJo’s Coffeehouse

Located in Goddard, KS and locally owned and operated, JoJo’s Coffee is one of the first local coffee spots in Goddard. They offer different coffee, espresso drinks, teas, smoothies and pastries.

Mini Co.

This is a local business owned by the same people that own Clifton Collective. This shop expands their selection of children’s toys and clothing. They are located in the Cleveland Collective Corner, with several other local shops.

Viola’s Pantry

Located in downtown Wichita, also in the Cleveland Corner, this Italian Market specializes in espresso, take home meals, breakfast and lunch.

Bake Sale

Who doesn’t love pastries and baked goods? Bake Sale just opened in Bradley Fair and is selling a variety of cakes, cookies, bars, loaves, pies and more!

Dutch Bros Coffee

While this is not a local business, Dutch Bros has been a long awaited addition to Wichita for over a year! They are well known for their large menu of coffee and Redbull drink creations. They are located on 21st and Maize in West Wichita and have already gained a large popularity in town.

Fatburger and Buffalo Express

Fatburger is a chain restaurant that has made their way to Wichita, famous for their handcrafted burgers. They also have a unique selection of shakes, including cereal flavors.

WSU Summertime Social

The Wichita State campus is hosting their Summertime Social next Thursday, July 14th from 9-11 A.M. This event is perfect for any WSU student, faculty member, staff member or anyone from the innovation community. The Summertime Social is held to encourage networking and involvement in the community. This event will have donuts, a tour of the new offices in the Partnership 3 building and shopping from a local business!

The brand Spencer Jane will be there, holding a trunk show and selling their casual business attire. This brand was started by Logan Brown, an entrepreneur that has worked closely with Wichita State and their Tech Transfer and Commercialization program. The event will be held at the Partnership 3 building on 18th and Oliver and is a come and go event. Stop by the Summertime Social and make some important connections!

Cargill Protein Helps Shocker Success

Cargill Protein is a 155,000 person company, dedicated to helping the community and their employees. The company distributes meat and egg products to retail and food manufacturers all around the world. Their main goal is helping their customers thrive.

Cargill Protein’s North America HeadQuarters is located in Wichita, which is a huge reason for their support in the community. Their president of North American protein business, Hans Kabat, says that their company is committed to investing in all levels of education and they are thrilled to support Wichita State. He has also stated that he looks forward to more partnership with the university in the future.

This June, Cargill Protein donated $250,000 to Shocker Success Center at Wichita State, to better increase resources for students. The Shocker Success Center Project is a renovation to Clinton Hall that will begin later this year. In recognition of Cargill’s gift, the Grand Staircase will be named after the community.

Fourth of July in Wichita

Fourth of July is a fun filled holiday that is great for all ages. There are great activities all over Wichita to celebrate, starting as early as Thursday! Here are some of the best things to do over this holiday weekend:

Bradley Fair Concert and Fireworks

Bradley Fair’s annual show starts at 7:30 in the square, Thursday, June 30th. The concert is scheduled to end around 9:30 and a fireworks show will be put on immediately after.

El Dorado Lake Celebration

On Saturday, July 2nd, grab your friends and family and head to El Dorado Lake! It is only $5 per car for a day on the lake. There will be biscuits and gravy served at 7a.m. and a parade at 9a.m. Misfit kitchen will be serving lunch and there will be a showing of ‘The Sandlot’ at 8:30.

Wichita Fourth of July Celebration

Starting at 7p.m. there will be food trucks near the Hyatt Lawn by the river. After the Windsurge game ends, around 9:40, the firework show will begin. Grab your lawn chairs, some dinner and enjoy the show!

There will be several other firework shows from stands and other nearby towns that will be great to attend with friends and family. Or celebrate on your own with BBQ, fireworks and swimming! It's Time for Summer Move Ins

Summer is move in season and your move in date is probably right around the corner! Start preparing for your new home with these tips:

Leave your clothes on the hangers

No need to hassle with packing and unpacking clothes, simply just put a garbage bag around a bundle of clothes to keep them clean and transfer your old closet to your new closet.

Stock up your freezer with easy meals

After the first few days of moving and unpacking, you’re going to want something quick and easy to keep you energized. Grab a few microwave meals to throw together when the day is done!

Declutter!

Before packing, go through your items to figure out things you want to get rid of. This saves you from bringing unwanted items to your new home.

Use tote bins and baskets to hold your items

Pack suitcases, tote bins, storage containers and laundry baskets to transport items. This will save you money on boxes and most of these are sturdier than cardboard boxes as well.

Create a checklist

Make a list of things to pack and things to do before moving. This may include a cleaning list and things to pack each day.

Wrap breakable items in towels and blankets

Save your breakables and money on packing paper by wrapping items in towels and blankets.

Pack a small bag for the day you move in

Pack a bag of necessities like clothes, toiletries and other essentials so you don’t have to dig in boxes after a long day to find your items.

Unpack your bathroom first

Get all the major things in your bathroom put together first. This way at the end of your day, your bathroom will be ready for you to shower and decompress.

Change your address

Notify the post office of your address change and update your address in your favorite online shopping apps. Avoid the hassle of things being delivered to the wrong address and make your updates before your move.

NetApp Has Opened Their New Building!

Anyone that has driven past the Wichita State University Campus in the last few months has been able to see the development of NetApp’s new building. As Wichita State expands its business programs, NetApp has increased their commitment to campus in order to help students gain knowledge and experience in their careers.

NetApp is a company that focuses on design, manufacturing, marketing and technical support. They specialize in cloud data solutions and work with major companies to provide these solutions.

Last week on June 15th, NetApp held their grand opening ceremony for their new building, where Kansas Governor, Laura Kelly, performed a ribbon cutting and speech. The new building is 168,000 square feet with an open office floor plan. This partnership is a great way to pave new relationships with other businesses in Wichita and for students and educators to develop their knowledge and build new connections.

Great news, students! In a recent update email, Shirley Lefever, Interim Executive Vice President and Provost of Wichita State, outlined plans to expand in-person classes for the Fall Semester. The message stated, "WSU has begun careful preparations for returning our campus to a more normal mode of operations for fall 2021. This includes an increase in in-person classes, as well as on-campus research, events, activities and community engagement." Does your forecast show below-freezing temperatures for an extended period? Look no further for tips on how to survive and thrive in your apartment during cold weather!

1. Keep your faucets at a slow drip . Keeping a slow drip on your faucets will help to prevent ice buildup in the pipes leading to your apartment. If you want to have running water, definitely keep your faucets at a slow drip.

2. Keep the cabinets below any faucets open . Doing so will help to keep the pipes below your faucets at room temperature, assisting in preventing them from freezing.

3. Don't set your thermostat too high . Try to keep your thermostat at its normal temperature. If you set it higher than usual, it could overheat your unit's heater and prevent it from working efficiently.

4. Try to minimize the amount of time your door/windows are open . If you have people coming in our out of your apartment, try to reduce the amount of time the door is open to limit warm air escaping your apartment.

5. When all else fails, use a space heater . If any of the above tips don't work, try using a space heater to warm up individual rooms or spaces in your apartment.

10 Things to Consider When Choosing an Apartment

There are plenty of things to consider when trying to find the perfect apartment, so we narrowed the list down to ten major points just for you!

1. Upfront Costs

Typically, rent is not the only financial concern one should have when moving into an apartment. There is usually a deposit due before move-in as well as the first month's rent (pro-rated or not). For questions on what your move-in costs would be at Seventeenth, stop by our leasing office.

2. Lease Term

A major consideration for signing a lease with an apartment complex is the lease term, or the length of the lease. Typically, leases are 12 months long, although some apartments offer different lease lengths such as 6 months or 18 months. Note: Shorter-term leases are usually subject to a short-term lease fee.

3. If You Need a Co-Signer

In order to qualify for an apartment, you may need a co-signer to meet the income/credit requirements. Typically, an apartment complex will look for 3 times the market rent in your income to be approved in the application process. If you do not meet this requirement, you may need a co-signer to be approved. Speak with your apartment's leasing staff to discuss whether you will need a co-signer.

4. Location, Location, Location

Location is always one of the biggest things to consider when choosing an apartment. Whether it is close to work, school, or other amenities/resources, location is always one of the biggest considerations to take into account. 5. Amenities

Many times, apartment complexes will offer several amenities or services to their residents. One thing you should always consider is what you would need to move in and be comfortable at an apartment complex. You should ask questions like whether the apartment is furnished, what comes included in the kitchen, and if there is free printing at the leasing office. These are all things you would need to consider so you know what you will need when you move in.

9. Things You Don't Need

You should also take into account what you won't need at an apartment complex. For instance, if an apartment is furnished in the living room but not in the bedrooms (just like Seventeenth's two and four bedroom units), you would not need to bring any living room furniture, but you would need to bring a bed and other bedroom furniture. Typically, apartments come with all the appliances you will need, so there is usually no need to bring those either.

10. Utilities

Finally, you should always ask if utilities are included in the rent or if the tenant is responsible for paying them. Sometimes utility costs will be included in the rent or in a separate fee with caps for electricity and water. Ask your apartment's leasing office for details on utility costs.

1. Go caroling.

Make sure to maintain social distancing, but caroling is a great way to spread some holiday cheer!

2. Enjoy holiday traditions.

Everyone has their own favorite tradition during the holidays, whether it's watching a special movie or making cookies. Think up some creative ways to maintain those traditions even when family and friends are separated this holiday season.

3. Embrace the winter climate.

The next time it snows, take part in some fun-filled snowy activities! Build a snowman, have a friendly snowball fight, or even go sledding!

4. Get a Christmas tree.

One of the best ways to celebrate the holiday season is by buying a tree (artificial or real, no judgment here) and decorating it to your heart's desire.

5. Look at holiday lights.

Wichita is a great spot to take a look at some world-class holiday light displays. Several great options include Illuminations at Botanica , the Arc's Lights , and Candy Cane Lane !

Get Ready for Fall Move-In: 5 Tips for a Stress-free Experience

Fall classes will resume soon at Wichita State University (WSU), and it’s time to get your housing in order! WSU’s on-campus housing move-in is taking place on August 8-15 . Fortunately, if you don’t have housing yet and want to live near WSU, we have units available at Seventeenth !

Moving is notoriously time-consuming and can get overwhelming at times. Make the move to Seventeenth and use our tips to make the process easier.

Measure everything. Before you move, make sure that all of your furniture and belongings will fit into your new apartment. This action will also help you better plan the layout of your space.
Color code your boxes. Assign a color to each room — kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom — and use stickers to quickly identify your boxes. It’s a faster method than writing out labels and makes unpacking less complicated.
Leave your clothes on the hangers. It’s a lot of extra work to unhang your clothes, fold them, box them up, and then unpack them to hang up at your new place. Skip the unnecessary steps and save time by leaving your clothes on their hangers when you move and wrap groupings of your clothes in trash bags for protection and easy mobility.
Bring a door stopper. You’ll be opening your door all day to move things in and out of your apartment, so make your life a little easier by using one.
Unpack the kitchen first. The kitchen is typically one of the most time-consuming rooms to unpack. It requires thorough organization and cleaning before you can start preparing meals. It’s best to get this task out of the way, so you aren’t too tired to do it later.

Wichita State’s Plan to Reopen Campus

Many of our residents either attend, work at or are involved with Wichita State University (WSU). The Coronavirus pandemic has affected all of us in many ways, including the shutdown of WSU’s campus, and as the state of Kansas begins to reopen, WSU is also developing long-term and short-term plans for reopening.

Each phase will be adapted and modified as needed. The opening for summer is planned to begin on May 26, which includes remote and online classes and gatherings of no more than 30 people. The fall semester is set to begin in August 2020, which includes gatherings of no more than 90 people and most likely a hybrid format of both online and in-person classes.
